Robbins Rants - "Here's what I hate ..."

This issue's editorial is more of a "rant" with a dose of advice thrown in for good measure. Truth is, after being on the Internet for over 5 years and dealing with THOUSANDS of customers, eventually I need to let off some steam or else I'll pop.

But, like I said, I'll throw in some helpful advice as well, so my "bitching" won't completely waste your time.

There isn't a week that goes by that we don't get an email from someone whining and moaning about how they have tried their "hardest" to __________ (promote, design, write, advertise, etc., etc.) and after days of hard work, they hate the world and everything is "scam".

For example, a few days ago we received an email about someone using TrafficSwarm and how they "only" got one sale after a week of using it and how it's "our fault" and the "site sucks" and how they "hate the Internet" and how "all marketers are scam artist"!

First and foremost, if you are having a bad day or you're frustrated ... I'm sorry, but don't send me any hate emails and take your crap out on me and my support people. Second, TrafficSwarm is a FREE service ... it delivers target visitors to your site and it's totally automated. Hence, you did NO WORK and you still got a sale... so why are you complaining?

So, here's what I hate ... why do so many people waste 90% of their time complaining about things? Especially when there is nothing to complain about. Are you that miserable? Are you that depressed? Does your sex life suck that much? Give me a break ... shut up and stop your whining already!

Anyway, just for a kick I decided to visit the site and see what he was promoting. Well, it took over one full minute before the site loaded and I have a CABLE modem ... I can't imagine how slow dial-up people would deal with site.

This person was promoting like 20 different products and it looked like Las Vegas with all the flash and colors and images and crazy sounds. Truth is, I was surprised he even got one sale because there was some much crap and confusion.

Now, I did take the time to send this individual an email with some advice on improving his site and his sales conversion (see FAQ 1 & 2 below). Normally I would simply delete an offensive email ... but I kinda felt sorry for the person and figured he was probably very new to Net and needed some marketing help.

Of course, I never got a reply back ... no thank you and the site is still the same. So, who knows. But the lesson I want to "preach" today has to do with PATIENCE! All the time we get emails with people complaining how they got "50 hits and still no sales" or "I'm not good at writing ads ... it's been 3 hours and I still can't think of anything".

Well, let me tell you something ... success takes time and effort and a TON of patience AND persistence. I have failed with many of my sites and businesses. But, I've kept my risk really low by testing and retesting and tracking everything so I don't waste my time OR money.

So, if you feel beaten or worn down and want to give up, please don't. I promise you, you will get the hang of it ... things will get easier ... and you WILL make money. Just give it some time. Don't give up after just "50 hits" or only 3 hours of effort.

I don't know of ANY marketer who has become successful in just a few short weeks or even months. It's a slow process that takes time ... years in fact and if you give up too soon, you'll never get the success that you deserve.

Please, just be patient ... take a break when you feel like destroying the computer or crying. Go do something else. Then come back again and try, try and try again. I'm sure this is stuff you already know ... but do you really follow it or do YOU also complain and give up at the first sight of trouble? ...

In the past year we've tried a dozen new ideas and only 3-4 of them worked. But when you finally do get a winner, it's BIG and it's AWESOME and VERY lucrative!

Frequently Asked Questions (Part 1)

What's wrong with my site ... why aren't I getting any sales?

This question is specific to the person's site that I was "ranting" about above in my editorial ... but the advice is something EVERYONE can follow. I'm not going to give you the URL to his site as I don't want to make an example out of him or embarrass him. Anyway ...

My first advice is to SLOW down. You have way too much going on at your site. You are promoting too many things and on top of it, they have nothing to do with each other.

You are promoting health and fitness products, Internet marketing and I even saw a couple of stuff about gambling and Internet casinos! How the heck do you target anyone who comes to your site?

You need to get direct and to the point because all you are doing is CONFUSING THE HECK out of people who are coming to your site. And a confused customer is a customer that do NOT act and will LEAVE your site.

That means, NO SALES for you. You need to reduce the options and all the different products and links and images and everything else. Start to TARGET the category of products for your home page. There is nothing wrong with selling multiple products and services, even if they have nothing to do with each other.

But you have to do it right or you will lose every time!

Frequently Asked Questions (Part 2)

What's wrong with my site ... why aren't I getting any sales? [continued]

Whether it's your newsletter ad, or banner ad or sales letter ... your main goal should always be to lead the customer by the hand and have them do exactly what YOU want them to do. This automatically reduces confusion for your customer which is exactly what you want.

In fact, Stanford University illustrated this point with a simple study. In a grocery store, they set up tasting booths that offered either 6 or 24 types of jam. Shoppers found the wider selection more enticing: 60% who passed it stopped and tested, while only 40% stopped at the booth with fewer flavors.

Yet the wider selection was confounding; just 3% who sampled there bought anything, while 30% made a purchase at the other (smaller selection) booth!

Point is ... do NOT confuse the customer! Keep things simple and give them 1-3 options ONLY. Anything more and people feel overwhelmed and will do nothing.

Lastly, by using ACTION words such as "click here to order" or "enter your email address in the box" or "fill out the form and hit the submit button" will lead the customer to do what YOU want them to do and they don't have to think about it.

Summary

Please be patient and don't give up so fast when it comes to making money. Most people get angry and frustrated because they think that all it takes is just "50 hits" to make a sale or if they read just one marketing course they "know it all" and will become successful in a few short weeks.

Making money takes time and patience and persistence. Sometimes, you WILL have a sale after just a few hits in a day or two ... and other times, it'll take hundreds of hits and may take weeks. Sometimes, it's just a numbers game.

Some days, we have dozens of sales ... and other days only a small handful. You never know, but stick with it and over the next few months things will grow and flourish into a nice and steady income!

The more you READ the better. The more you DO the better. The more you "screw up" the better because that means at least you are learning and most likely you are heading in the right direction.

If you want to be successful with your advertising or your website, you cannot confuse your visitors. Your goal is to keep things simple and give a potential customer 1-3 options.

Too many choices = NO ACTION = ZERO SALES and people will just leave your site and not do anything.

Lastly, make sure you use action words such as "click here to order" and "fill in your email address". By doing this, you further REDUCE CONFUSION by holding the customer's hand and persuading them to do what you want them to do (like order your product or subscribe to your newsletter).

Thanks for taking the time to read this issue. Please do me and yourself a favor and take 20 seconds and tell me what you think about this issue. You can rate it below. I can't reply back to all your emails (I get hundreds of them), but I DO read EVERY SINGLE ONE of them and really try my best to give you more of what you do like and less of what you don't. Results are seen after your submission.
