What To Do & How To Make Money
When The Economy SUCKS!

I don't know about you, but I've had a pretty stressful year so far ... especially this past month or so. Now, I'm not here to talk about my personal life (that's like a soap opera in itself, so I'll save it for another issue). After all, this is a "marketing" newsletter, so let's stick to the subject of marketing.

But due to the recent terrorism act(s) and now all of this anthrax scare and potential "chemical warfare" stuff going on ... adding to the already miserable economy we've had all year, things have been somewhat "depressing" lately. There is no doubt that businesses in general, especially the Internet, have had a VERY rough year.

Most marketers on the Net and in other newsletters may not want to admit it, but sales are definitely lower today than they were a year ago (and at times, substantially lower). It's much harder to get a sale these days. People have less money to spend and unfortunately, this will DIRECTLY effect your online business, sales and profits.

It's very hard to sell something (or anything) to people who don't have money. So, what are you to do? If you've just started an online business, how are you going to get it up and running when "times are tough" like now? Or if you're looking to get into an online, home-based business to supplement your current income or even replace it ... is this a good time to even start or should you wait?

Here's My Advice ...

There have been MANY times this year where I was very confused as to what I wanted to do with my business and my life. At times, I was working twice as hard ... only to make half the amount of money I had made the previous year. That's no fun and it's not good for the mind or body.

One thing I noticed is that I was worrying a LOT more than I usually do. I was always stressed out ... moody ... grumpy and even angry at times. Anyway, I'm saying all of this and revealing my "inner most thoughts" to you only because I don't think I'm alone and from the amount of emails we receive daily, I KNOW many of you also feel very stressed out (at least more than usual).

Anyway, in the next few issues I'm going to discuss different ways of getting you out of this temporary economic slowdown and back on track. In the meantime, here's what I'd suggest:

1. First, try not to worry so much. I KNOW that's much easier said than done. But to be honest with you, we all know things can be a lot worse. For example, you could be diagnosed with cancer or some other illness. Or a family member can die unexpectedly.

I hope none of these things happen and they probably won't. But my point is that things can ALWAYS be a lot worse, so be happy that they aren't.

You know, there is a great saying that says "If you dwell on what you don't have, you'll get more of the same!" Point is, instead of wasting your valuable time worrying about what's gone wrong or what COULD go wrong, TRY your hardest to put most of your mental energy on all the good things that are going on in your life.
2. Next, make some "ALONE" time during the day for yourself. Put aside an hour or so and just do nothing or watch a ball game on TV or take a nap, read a book, take a walk, go to the gym, take a long bath, etc., etc.

This alone time will make you feel whole again. Most of us are run down by the end of the day trying to please everyone and by utilizing this time to do nothing or something you enjoy, will go along way in healing yourself.

Plus, it'll keep you from exploding for no reason around friends and family. Let's face it, the last thing you need to hear at the end of a long day is someone wanting you to do something for them. It'll be much easier to give to someone else once you have FIRST given to YOURSELF!
3. Lastly, I HIGHLY recommend you get a book called, "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnegie (you can get it at Amazon.com). It's an awesome book by an awesome person. Dale Carnegie is one of the most successful people in the 20th century ... not just monetarily, but in every other aspect of life.

That's it for now. The above recommendations are just a few ways you can improve your day and things you probably already know. Remember, making money FIRST begins in the mind. Once you can think straight and not waste your valuable time and energy worrying all day long, it'll be much easier to make money.

Frequently Asked Questions (Part 1)

Hi Sam, I live in another country ... can you please explain to me how I should be marketing differently online than someone who lives in the United States?

Well, the truth is that there is absolutely no difference. It doesn't matter what country you live in or what state or city. It doesn't matter what time zone, if PST or EST. It doesn't matter if it's summer in Australia and winter in the USA.

You need to think of the Internet as one big country. No boundaries or regulations. It's open for business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ALL YEAR LONG - including holidays.

The ONLY thing you need to worry about is what type of business you have and the type of products and services you are going to offer. If you are selling watches, you aren't going to care who buys them ... whether they are from the USA or UK or India. (We all tell time the same way).

Just make sure that you are able to ship your products worldwide.

Now, there is going to be one restriction and that's the language barrier. Most of the Internet users are US based and hence, most of the money being spent is by US citizens who speak ENGLISH.

That doesn't mean they (US citizens) aren't going to buy products or services from another country ... that just means make sure your website is written in English, the product price is listed in US dollars and that you accept all forms of credit card payments.

See, unless you go to our contact page at this site, you have NO idea where we are located. For all you know, I could be on Gilligan's Island. =)

If possible, we would have liked to translate our sites and products into different languages. But it's just not cost effective. The demand isn't very high.

Most Internet users are US based, followed by the United Kingdom and Australia. Again, all of these countries speak English.

And What About Marketing? ...

Again, the marketing makes no difference. For example, if you are going to promote through the use of search engines, google.com isn't going to care much if you aren't located in the US.

The question is can your site be understood by English speaking people? If you ship a product, do you ship worldwide? And if your product is digital, then it won't matter because anyone with an Internet connection can download a software program or script or whatever.

Frequently Asked Questions (Part 2)

How can I start a business if I don't have any money?

Well, you really can't start any type of OFF-LINE business without having a good amount of money, so let's assume you are speaking about an online Internet-based business.

With an online business, you can easily get started for around $30-$100 a month and with little risk. Of course, many people who claim they are "broke", usually reply back and say "great, but I can't even afford $30 a month".

To these people I say, "that's bullshit!" I've consulted thousands of people and almost all the time, these people had some lame excuse as to how they were broke or they didn't have the time or whatever.

At the end, the real reason was they didn't want it bad enough!

If you can't save a dollar or two a day (which comes out to $30-$60 a month), then you've got some bigger problems to deal with. Stop buying the cigarettes or the $3 coffee every day. Stop eating out and start bringing food from home for your lunch at work.

Get rid of the cable TV and start buying things that you ONLY NEED to live, not just want. Trust me, by doing these little things, you can easily save $50 to $100 a month or more.

"But I don't have the time!..."

As far as the excuse of "not having the time" ... here's a simple solution - STOP WATCHING TV! Almost the entire population spends at LEAST an hour or two (and usually a lot more) each and every day watching TV.

Or at the very least, put aside a few hours on the weekend and start doing some research about whatever online business you want to begin.

How I Did It

When I got started, I bought almost everything I could afford on marketing and starting a business. From $5 books at the book store to $200 marketing courses. And I reread these courses MANY times.

I stopped watching TV all together for a few months at one point and just read and read and read. In fact, when I was going to school, I would set my alarm an hour earlier three times a week so I can read and do some research.

I REALLY wanted to change my life and going to school and working at the same time and being BROKE every month was horrible. I knew that only I could take action and change my life because nobody else would help me.

Instead of watching the same infomercial on TV late at night, 50 times over and over again ... or reading the same sales letter at some website over and over and over and wasting valuable time, I would simply purchase the course if I could afford it.

Many times I would hear the same information or something very similar. But I pretty much ALWAYS learned something new ... even if it was very minor. And this new "minor" thing would usually lead to bigger things.

And of course, every time I would reread a course, I picked up something that I hadn't previously or I was REMINDED of a marketing tactic that I had forgotten or hadn't used in a while.

Lastly, I never returned anything - regardless of the guarantee. By doing so would mean that I didn't learn a single thing and I know that would be a complete lie! There is no that I know so much that I couldn't learn a singe thing (when you think you know it all is when you stop growing and learning).

If I looked for it, I ALWAYS did discover something new or learn a new twist on an old idea ... which of course, sparked off new ideas in my head. Like I said, you will ALWAYS learn something new ... even if it's small. And at the very least, you will be reminded of something that you hadn't used in a while.

And remember, KNOWING something does not mean you will ever be successful. You actually have to DO it and TAKE ACTION. Almost every book or marketing course that I ever read would push me a little further in the right direction.

So, do yourself a favor and stop with the excuses. They ONLY end up hurting you and your family!

Summary

I know that times are "tough" right now ... with the economy being as bad as it is right now and all of the "disasters" the USA is going through ... as well as the rest of the world, things may not look so good over the next couple months. I'm pretty sure that once the new year starts things will pick up ... the economy, the stock market, sales and peoples attitudes in general. Anyway, here's what we covered in this issue:

With a bad economy and poor Internet sales, it may be difficult for most of us to be positive and stay focused. Here's a few things you can do to help improve you day and your business:
  1. Try not to worry so much. Even though this is easier said, things can ALWAYS be a lot worse and worrying about a situation doesn't help solve it.

  2. Give yourself 30-60 minutes each day just to yourself. Some "alone" time and do nothing but relax. Take a nap or read a book or go to the gym or take a long bath or just stare at the ceiling.

  3. I highly recommend you get a book called, "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnegie (you can get it at Amazon.com).

When starting an online business, it doesn't matter where you live. It makes no difference what country you live in or what time zone or the current season or anything. The Internet is global and it's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The ONLY thing that matters is you need to make sure that your site is in English since 90% of the Internet users speak and understand English.

If you want to start an online business, please don't make any excuses such as "I don't have the money" or "I don't have the time". These are all lies and excuses people make up because they fear success (yes, you read that right).

Anyone can start a business online and start making a profit with $30-$50 a month. All you need is determination and you have to want it bad enough. Otherwise, save your excuses for someone else because you only end up hurting yourself.

Thanks for taking the time to read this issue. As always, we would greatly appreciate it if you wanted to "Give Feedback & Win" or if you have any ideas for a future newsletter issue or article. Take care and have a great day!
